September: Deaf Awareness Month

Deaf awareness month is so different than last year! Last year, Inaara had just had her implants activated and we were struggling to keep them on her, to communicate with her, and see her face all the challenges. I remember, we would take Inaara for a car ride and we used to ask ourselves if we would ever be able to speak to her while in the car because she would take off her implants, seperate all the pieces and throw them around. We felt so defeated and stressed for our daughter and this new chapter in her life.

One full year with activated implants has been such a game changer for our family. Inaara is able to communicate while driving, she has started speaking in full sentences, her speech has significantly improved, her temper tantrums have really shifted to positive ways of handling her emotions and all around this whole experience has been so uplifting.

I know that cochlear implants are not the solution for all children or families. However, for our family and for our child we could not be more thankful for this advancement in medicine and technology to be able to give her the gift of hearing, again.

Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out and supported us through this transition in her life and to her teachers who have helped us overcome many of the challenges that we have faced with Inaara losing her hearing. We are so incredibly grateful and we thank god each and every day for literally bringing Inaara back to us.

xx
